I sewed these cushions in 2024. There were five of them. I set two aside because the sheets I had used were haloed with sweat. Hyperhidrosis comes from an overactivity of the sympathetic nervous system. The sweat produced by the sweat glands depends directly on that system. Anxiety, fear, excitement, any strong emotion, can trigger it.
A human is on average 1.70 m tall, a mattress about 2 m. Those extra thirty centimetres prevent you from sleeping “on the edge.” It’s called a comfort margin.
The cushions in the exhibition measure 1.40 m.Claude Monet painted nearly two hundred and fifty canvases of light about to vanish over a marsh, even as his eyes gradually refused any form of light, due to a degenerative opacification of the lens. I imagine beauty appeared there, perhaps because his damaged eyes no longer saw a marsh but something entirely different, entirely present.
I think of people who read the Water Lilies as an ideal image, perfect nature, absolute romanticism. There are companies in China that produce Water Lilies merchandise: tablecloths, socks, puzzles. Mass-produced objects, under the pale glare of a neon light, far from a marsh, far from the natural light that slowly fades away. The light in an apartment building lobby is sometimes off, sometimes on.
It replaces the neon fixture that used to be there.
The exhibition is called Thousand Years.
A duration both immense and tiny at once, depending on the lens through which you look at it.
